Civil status changes — marriages, divorces, recognitions, name changes. That's why foreign authorities almost always refuse an old record, however authentic, and require a freshly issued extract (usually under 6, sometimes 3 months). Retrieval goes through the civil-status office of the place of origin or event — each canton with its own practice.
